Social Media is a Hot Topic – What is it?

WikiPedia Provides this Definition: Social Media” Marketing is primarily internet-based but also ties in with non-internet based methodologies such as word of mouth advertising. Social media marketing is the process of promoting a site, business or brand through social media channels by engaging and interacting with existing consumers or potential consumers. The term most often refers to activities that are used to enable marketers to build links, attention and receive large amounts of traffic for their company or site.

At the core of social media marketing is the ideas that by listening to customers, companies will understand what the consumer values and needs. In order to understand what your customer wants, their preferences, behaviors and web ability you must utilize social media marketing in order to gain a holistic view of your users.

Tim O’Reilly coined the term “Web 2.0” in 2004 at a new media conference and since that time companies have been trying their hardest to find out how to deploy “Web 2.0″ applications”. The general consensus since that time is the mindset that if a competitor has user generated content then the competing companies brand be utilizing user generated content, be it “blogs”, “wikis”, “widgets”, or other forms of “social media”. Now that most companies have been exposed to the social applications available in media today, they must now focus on building engaging online interactions with customers. Although social media marketing refers to activities that are beneficial to marketers and companies alike, the foundation of these activities is based on the integration of technology, social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio. The foundations of social media marketing provide numerous benefits to those who are targeted by the social media marketer. Consumers of social media gain benefits from these targeted initiatives in a multitude of ways including entertainment, education, market research and the ability to engage with brands directly. Consumers no longer have to sit back and watch as brands pass them by, they are now empowered with a voice that allows them to have their opinions heard across the social web.

“Word of mouth marketing” has been a long standing form of social marketing. As the development of new social communities and sites grow with it does the increase in the ability to spread a message through word of mouth marketing. The onset of “buzz marketing” and social media marketing has created a new form of word of mouth marketing. Word of mouth marketing no longer takes on the connotation of being a largely offline venue as it did in previous years. Buzz Marketing and Social media marketing have created a new way for consumers to spread their opinions through blogs, forums, wikis and many other forms of social media while continuing the process of word of mouth marketing. Social media marketing forms a foundation based on the fact that consumers will be engaged by a product or brand and thus spread the word to peers, colleagues and family members. This is the basis for the link between social media marketing and word of mouth (wom) marketing.

Social media marketing encompasses two very distinct facets. The first of which is “SMO (Social Media Optimization)”. SMO refers to the process of trying to get already established content distributed more widely across many social media platforms. This tactic refers to on-page approaches which can be taken to improve a website for the new age of social media. These optimizations may include but are not limited to adding links to service providers such as Digg, Reddit and Del.icio.us so that these pages can be easily submitted to and for these providers.
